Will van Overbeek has been taking photographs in and around Austin's Barton Springs pool for 25 years. His current one-man show at the Austin Museum of Art features his photos of people in the pool, but he's spent a lot of time photographing dogs in the water below the pool's dam. We don't usually show photographs, but these are so beautiful, and fun, and it's so hot, we just couldn't resist.

Austin artist Ethan Azarian gets out of his house and into Yard Dog.
Originally from Vermont where his father, folk legend Tom Banjo, still resides, Ethan has lived in Austin, TX, for fifteen years, founding and releasing four albums with the critically acclaimed band Orange Mothers. Described as "prophetic," truly original, and non-commercial, Ethan's style is an eclectic mix of folk, pop, and rock. Ethan makes his living as an artist working out of his studio the In-House Gallery and has been named best local artist by the Austin Chronicle. In 2005, Ethan combined his music and art, playing musical venues and showing his paintings around the country on his Greyhound Bus Tour. For his show at Yard Dog, Ethan has focused his energies on paintings of flying saucers and cows.

For many years, Eric Bellis, a native of the UK living in Los Angeles, has created images of farm animals inspired by 19th-century English painting. While continuing his tradition of farm animal paintings, Bellis has recently turned his attention to North America’s largest native land mammal, the buffalo. This showing of his latest paintings will include 15 paintings of buffalo.
Eric is a long-time member of the UK band the Mekons and a solo recording artist on Bloodshot Records.

YARD DOG explores the Emerald City beyond the stereotypical images of coffee, rain, software and grunge in a show of recent works by 2 innovative Seattle artists.

DEBORAH MERSKY grew up in Austin, Texas and has lived in Seattle for the past 21 years. She earned an MFA at the University of Washington and has been exhibiting her work since 1980. As a public artist, she creates elaborate, large-scale installations executed in such materials as glass and metal and integrated into buildings. Both her public and studio works are informed by the natural world, with natural elements removed from their original contexts and rearranged to create patterns. She often combines printmaking and collage. Recently she has been combining cut-up paper money and maps in her collages. These works have colonial overtones and speak to Mersky’s frustration with current government affairs.

JOE MAX EMMINGER is a self-taught painter living in Seattle. He began making art in the early 1970s. His paintings depict figures that struggle to maintain stability in chaotic situations. This idea of equilibrium between opposing forces is reinforced in the works through the balance of humor with more serious underpinnings. Emminger says of his bold, stark compositions, “I try to stay out of the way and let them happen. I try to leave room for them to breathe and live in the world.”

“Creative Growth/Yard Dog” marks the first collaboration between Yard Dog and Creative Growth Art Center of Oakland, California, and includes works by Creative Growth artists John Martin, Aurie Ramirez, Luis Aguilera, and Gerone Spruill.
Creative Growth Art Center, founded in 1974, is the oldest and largest visual arts center and exhibition space for adults with developmental and physical disabilities in the world. The Center has fostered public awareness and understanding of outsider art nationwide through its education, exhibition, and publishing activities.
