Purvis Young

Purvis Young (1942 - 2010) lived all his life in Miami. While serving time in prison as a young man, he took up painting. His paintings have an abstract look but they are anything but that. Young worked with materials scavenged on the streets, and his highly symbolic and visionary works on these found surfaces—wood, paper, cardboard— reflect and interpret the turmoil of daily life there.
